L’Auto-Critica di una Tela

Il Dio egizio Toth sul Tempio romano di Iside, olio su tela di cotone, 150×100 cm. La Tela rappresenta un’immagine molto comune negli affreschi dei Templi dell’antica Roma Repubblicana. Tracce che rimandano al motivo da me dipinto si possono trovare negli scavi di Pompei, in particolar modo nel quartiere alessandrino, molto legato all’antico Egitto. Thot (scritto anche Toth o Thoth) è la divinità egizia della luna, sapienza, scrittura, magia, misura del tempo, matematica e geometria. È rappresentato sotto forma di ibis sacro, uccello che vola sulle rive del Nilo, o sotto forma (meno frequente) di babbuino. Nella mia tela è dipinto come ibis con becco adunco, in prossimità di un’urna cineraria. Al di sotto del piano di pietra scorre un rigoglioso fiume. Toth è il gran visir del Dio Ra e, come inventore della scrittura, è patrono degli scribi. Inoltre, è aiutante di Osiride, il Dio giudice del mondo degli inferi, in quanto scriveva la storia della vita dei defunti. È stato a volte identificato con il dio greco Ermes o Hermes Trismegistus e si pensa sia alla base dell’invenzione dei Tarocchi. Come divinità lunare, lo associo al culto della Dea Iside. Toth e Iside sono alla base della creazione del Mondo. Iside o Isis è la dea della maternità, della fertilità e della magia, ha insegnato alle donne la parola e le arti domestiche, civilizzando il Mondo: è madre di Horus. E’ legata all’oltretomba, e io rappesento il suo tempio con due colonne con capitelli di stile corinzio, le cui forme rimandano al volto di un demone: presenti nella tela le urne cinerarie. Il culto di Iside fu proibito nella Roma Imperiale a partire dal 19 a.C. da Tiberio che ne perseguitò i seguaci, ma le matrone continuarono a praticarlo in gran segreto fino all’avvento del Cristianesimo: Iside è considerata dalle Janare (streghe) di Benevento la gran Signora. The auto-Criticism of a Canvas

The Egyptian God Toth on the Iside‘s Roman Temple, oil on cotton canvas, 150×100 cms. The Canvas represents a very common image in the frescos of the ancient Republican Rome Temples. Traces about the motive painting by me can be found in the archaeological site in Pompeii, in particular in the Alexandrine district, very related to ancient Egypt. Thot (also written Toth or Thoth) is the Egyptian divinity of the moon, wisdom, writing, magic, measure of the time, mathematics and geometry. He is represented in the form of sacred ibis, bird that flies on the Nile’s shores, or in the form of (less frequent) baboon. In my canvas He is painted as ibis with hooked beak, in proximity of a cineraria urn. To the bottom of a plan of stone flows a luxuriant river. Toth is the big visir of God Ra and, as inventor of writing, is patron of the scribes. Besides, He is assistant of Osiride, the judge God of the dead, ‘cause He wrote the life’s history of the dead ones. He has been identified at times with the Greek god Ermes or Hermes Trismegistus and He is thought both at the origin of the Tarots invention. As lunar divinity, I associate him to the Goddess Iside’s cult. Toth and Iside are at the origin of the World’s creation. Iside or Isis is the goddess of the maternity, the fertility and magic, She has taught to women the word and the domestic arts, civilizing the World: She is mother of Horus. And’ She related to the afterlife and I painted Her temple with two columns with Corinthian style capitals, whose forms postpone to a demon’s face: in the canvas there are the cineraria urns. The Iside’s cult was forbidden in the Imperial Rome about 19 B.C. by Tiberius that persecuted the followers of it, but the matrons kept on practicing it in big secret up to the Christianity’s advent: Iside is considered by the Janares (witches) of Benevento the big Lady. Besides, She is invoked in the Masonic environments of XVII Century…
